Two Families Close on Habitat Homes this May

Two More Families Achieve the Strength, Stability, and Independence of Homeownership

Two local families achieve their dreams of homeownership this month when they purchase their completed Habitat homes! Habitat Capital Region has been working with the homebuyers on their properties for the last year through the Homeownership Program, which reduces barriers to homeownership for low- to moderate-income families and individuals.

63 volunteers contributed 984 hours of time helping to build these two homes alongside Habitat Capital Region’s construction team and the homebuyers themselves.

About the homeowner families

Lonetta

Lonetta is a mother to five children, ranging in age from 19 to 2 years old. She has faced unexpected life circumstances with immense compassion and strength, and built a loving, supportive environment for her family.

“I chose Habitat so that I could give my babies a forever, forever home. I want them to be safe. I want them to be able to grow up in [a home] that is theirs that they can continue to be at forever.” – Lonetta, Habitat Homeowner

Salah and Fatema

Salah and Fatema moved to the United States in 2008 with their two children as refugees from Iraq. They have lived in their current apartment complex for over 10 years, during which time they have dreamed of owning a home in a safer neighborhood. They were met with financial barriers on the open housing market, so when a friend told them about Habitat Capital Region’s Homeownership Program, they were excited and ready to take the next steps toward a more stable future.

“I really want to see them happy in a house … less stressed. I think that’s all they’ve been wanting for a long time.” – Esta, daughter of Habitat Homeowners

About their journey with Habitat Capital Region

The homebuyers worked hard to purchase these homes. Applicants to the Homeownership Program must meet certain income and financial readiness qualifications. Once they are approved to the program, they attend financial education courses, home maintenance education, and complete hundreds of hours of sweat equity. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and purchase their homes with an affordable, low-interest mortgage.
