Katie has called her Lansing house a home for the past 30 years, but keeping up with home repairs on a single social security income became an overwhelming challenge. "I've replaced gutters, roof, and paid off my home," Katie shared. "I’ve exhausted all of my savings."
Despite her best efforts, the home she sacrificed so much for was deteriorating, and Katie found herself in a difficult situation. That’s when she discovered Habitat for Humanity Capital Region’s Critical Home Repair Program. She applied with a glimmer of hope, determined to preserve the cherished home where she raised her children. Moving was never an option in Katie’s mind; she just needed a helping hand to ensure her home's safety.
The drafty doors and basement windows were a constant battle, allowing cold air and bugs to invade her sanctuary. Katie’s temporary solution of plastic film and blankets kept the winter chill at bay but left her basement windows perpetually covered, stifling airflow during the summer months.
Thanks to the generous funding from the MSHDA MI-HOPE grant, Katie’s home has undergone a remarkable transformation. The new glass block windows are now airtight, watertight, and provide the perfect balance of privacy and natural light. Her doors, once framed by decaying wood, have been replaced with secure, sturdy ones, giving Katie peace of mind.
Upon the completion of the repairs, Katie expressed her profound gratitude, saying...
"The project means a lot to me because I couldn't afford the repairs without it. When I heard about Habitat, it was a blessing, a blessing from God. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart." - KATIE, Critical Home Repair partner
