Built with Pride: A Successful Start to New Affinity Build

Despite a rainy start, Habitat Capital Region’s inaugural Pride Build emerged as a shining example of what happens when inclusion, compassion, and purpose come together. Over three incredible days, dozens of volunteers—undeterred by the weather—helped transform Mario and Minerva’s future home.

Day 1 may have been washed out, but that didn’t dampen the excitement. Volunteers from Michigan State University’s School of Criminal Justice were the first on-site. This group of students had no construction experience, but under the expert guidance of Habitat Capital Region’s construction team, they were able to sheath the entire roof in one afternoon. Their energy and dedication set the tone for the rest of the build, where volunteers installed doors, windows, and built a front porch.

We are also grateful to have had the support of the Lansing Area AIDS Network, whose team joined us on-site and exemplified what it means to stand for community health and equity. Together, these volunteers embodied the true meaning of Pride: a celebration of love, resilience, and the belief that everyone deserves a safe, stable place to call home.

A heartfelt thank-you goes out to our presenting partner, Suits and the City, whose generosity and hard work helped make Pride Build possible. Their partnership was the foundation on which this event stood, helping us bring together volunteers and advocates from across the region to take real, tangible steps toward affordable and equitable housing in our community.

Habitat Capital Region is proud to build a space where everyone belongs, and a community where everybody can serve.
