Rain couldn’t dampen the excitement as neighbors, family, community partners, and future homeowners gathered for a historic groundbreaking on Ingham Street. For the first time, Habitat for Humanity Capital Region is building two homes simultaneously on adjacent lots. Supporters gathered to celebrate this milestone moment, and Todd Gute led the group in a prayer for the families who will call these lots home. The homeowner partners, along with their friends and family, picked up their shovels and officially broke ground for these future homes.
Both plots of land are already matched with future homeowners. On one side, Mario and Minerva are eager to settle into a place of safety and stability. After years of living in cramped rental housing and dealing with neighborhood crime, they are ready for a fresh start. For them, homeownership represents more than a roof over their heads - it is the promise of sanctuary and peace, a place where they can welcome their children and grandchildren.

On the adjacent lot, the future Lot C Homebuyer expressed their gratitude and anticipation. “Habitat for Humanity has made my dream of becoming a homeowner a reality,” the homeowner partner shared. “I’m really excited!” Like Mario and Minerva, they look forward to the security that will come with owning their own home.
The dual build is made possible through support from the Ingham County Housing Trust Fund and will reflect Habitat’s commitment to innovation and accessibility. These homes will incorporate energy-efficient construction techniques to keep costs manageable over the long term, as well as features that make them adaptable for aging in place. Together, these advances ensure that the families moving in will have safe, sustainable, and lasting homes.
It takes the generous support of our corporate partners, volunteers, and community members to make a difference.
