Habitat Capital Region Hosts Second Annual Pride Build

Last week marked Habitat for Humanity Capital Region’s second annual Pride Build. From October 14-17, Habitat Capital Region hosted four teams of volunteers, bringing together LGBTQIA+ volunteers, supporters, and community partners to help build two houses. These two homes are part of a ten-home affordable housing development on Valencia Blvd, Habitat Capital Region’s largest project to date.

Suits and the City, an LGBTQIA+ professional organization dedicated to meaningful networking, authenticity, community, and professional growth, served as this year’s presenting partner. They also raised more than $1,800 as part of an individual peer-to-peer giving campaign. Supporting partners Jackson National, Lansing Area AIDS Network, and Eaton Community Bank also joined as supporting partners, bringing their own volunteers to the build site.

The volunteers built the front and side decks of both houses on Valencia Blvd., which will soon become homes for Edward and Souci, two Habitat Capital Region homebuyer partners. The week brought its share of challenges: Jackson volunteers enthusiastically braved rain, wind, and chill to keep building.

On the final day, Suits and the City volunteers helped finish the porches under sunny yet frigid skies. Souci joined the Day 4 crew as part of her Habitat sweat equity hours, helping build the porch of the home she’ll soon call her own.  [see below]

Pride Build represents Habitat Capital Region’s dedication to housing equity. LGBTQIA+ people can face unique barriers to safe, affordable housing, and building a more equitable community means ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to find a stable place to call home. By bringing volunteers and community partners together, Pride Build helps turn that shared vision into real, tangible progress for local families.

Pride Build is made possible by the generosity of volunteers, donors, and community partners who believe that everyone deserves a safe, affordable place to call home. Thank you to Suits and the City, Jackson National, Lansing Area AIDS Network, Eaton Community Bank, and every volunteer who gave their time and energy to this year’s Pride Build.
